The 1st Annual Our Community Salutes High School Enlistee Recognition Ceremony of Baltimore, MD to honor the Class of 2021 high school seniors and their parents/guardians who plan to enlist into the military, will be held on May 24, 2021 through an online stream starting at 6:30PM EDT.
Our 2021 featured speakers include:
- Guy Filippelli - (Emcee of the Event). Managing Partner of Squadra Ventures, an early stage VC fund in Baltimore, MD. He was most recently Founder and CEO of RedOwl, which was acquired by Forcepoint in August 2017. Prior to RedOwl, Guy co-founded Berico Technologies, a high-end engineering firm that services the federal government, and launched Oxpoint Holdings, an investment arm that has invested in and incubated multiple private ventures. He began his career as a US Army intelligence officer, serving in Korea, Italy, Germany, and Afghanistan,and finishing his service at NSA. In 2007, Mr. Filippelli received the National Intelligence Medallion, the nation’s highest award for non-governmental personnel, for his efforts in Iraq as the analytic lead of NSA’s RT-RG program. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, holds a B.S. in Economics from the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, and an M.A. in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Oxford University, where he studied as a Marshall Scholar. He is Chairman of the Commit Foundation, a non-profit that aims to enable serendipity for transitioning veterans through intimate mentoring workshops and one-on-one transition assistance. He also serves on the Board of the National Cryptologic Foundation, the University of Maryland BioPark, and the Investment Committee of the France Merrick Foundation. He lives in Baltimore with his wife, Raina, and two children, Sienna (8) and Luca (6). Guy is obsessed with genealogy (especially Italian) and truly enjoys food, wine, and struggles with golf and now tennis.
- Kevin Plank. Kevin Plank is the founder, chairman and former CEO at Under Armour, one of the most successful sportswear companies in the world. Mr. Plank became Under Armour’s Executive Chairman and Brand Chief in January 2020, after serving as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors from 1996 to 2019, and President from 1996 to July 2008 and August 2010 to July 2017. Founded in 1996 out of frustration that cotton T-shirts were unable to keep him dry and comfortable while playing football at the University of Maryland, Mr. Plank designed and created a new apparel innovation that efficiently wicked sweat to optimize athletic performance. Nearly a quarter of a century later and Under Armour has grown into one of the world’s leading developer, marketer, and distributor of branded performance apparel, footwear and accessories. Mr. Plank also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Inc., and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation.
- Wes Moore. Wes Moore is the CEO of Robin Hood, one of the largest anti-poverty forces in the nation. He is a bestselling author, a combat veteran, and a social entrepreneur.Wes’ first book, “The Other Wes Moore,” a perennial New York Times bestseller, captured the nation’s attention on the fine line between success and failure in our communities and in ourselves. He is also the author of the bestselling books “The Work,” “Discovering Wes Moore,” and “This Way Home.”Wes grew up in Baltimore and the Bronx, where he was raised by a single mom. Despite childhood challenges, he graduated Phi Theta Kappa from Valley Forge Military College in 1998 and Phi Beta Kappa from Johns Hopkins University in 2001. He earned an MLitt in International Relations from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar in 2004. Wes then served as a captain and paratrooper with the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne, including a combat deployment to Afghanistan. He later served as a White House Fellow to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.Before becoming CEO at Robin Hood, Wes was the founder and CEO at BridgeEdU, an innovative tech platform addressing the college completion and job placement crisis.
- Linda L. Singh. As the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Kaleidoscope Affect, LLC providing leadership and strategic advisory services for a variety of clients. Dr. Singh is transitioning from the Interim Executive Director and CEO of TEDCO focused on investing and helping to grow early stage technology and life sciences companies to fuel economic development and growth. Prior to that she served as a Major General in the Maryland National Guard, dedicating more than 38 years of service. As the Adjutant General and a Cabinet Secretary she was responsible for the Maryland Military Department. As part of her military role she worked with senior level officials at ministerial and ambassador levels in Estonia and Bosnia developing country strategies under the Department of Defense State Partnership Program. Dr. Singh retired from Accenture in 2016, she was a Managing Director in the Health and Public Service North America Operating Unit where she served for 21 years.Dr. Singh personally mentors, coaches and speaks on leadership, diversity, adversity, career transition and issues that plague women and veterans in the workplace. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business, a Master of Business Administration, a Master of Strategic Studies and a PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. She is the author of “Moments of Choice: My path to leadership” and “What’s in Your Box” which is schedule for early 2020 release.She has received numerous awards, among them are the 2013 DiversityMBA Top 100 under 50 Diverse Emerging Leaders, The Network Journal 25 Influential Black Women in Business Award for 2014 and recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor for 2015. She was also inducted into the Maryland Women’s Hall of Fame in March 2015.
- Calvin Butler. Calvin G. Butler Jr. is a senior executive vice president of Exelon and chief executive officer of Exelon Utilities. Butler oversees Exelon’s six local electric and natural gas companies -- Atlantic City Electric, BGE, ComEd, Delmarva Power, PECO and Pepco. Together, they form the nation’s largest utility company by customer count, serving approximately 10 million electric and gas customers in New Jersey, Maryland, Illinois, Delaware, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia, respectively. Butler serves as vice chairman of each utility’s board and is a member of Exelon’s executive committee.Butler serves on the boards of M&T Bank Corporation and M&T Bank, its principal banking subsidiary, and is board chair of the Gridwise Alliance, an advocacy organization promoting modernization and innovation for the nation’s electrical grid. He is also on the Board of Directors for RLI Corp, serving as a member of its audit and nominations/governance committees. He is also Chair of the Board of Directors of the Greater Baltimore Committee, a regional organization of more than 500 business/civic leaders dedicated to improving the business climate of Greater Baltimore.
Butler previously served as CEO of BGE from 2014 to 2019. Prior to that role, Butler was BGE’s senior vice president, regulatory and external affairs. Butler also served as Exelon’s senior vice president of corporate affairs, Chief Human Resources Officer, and held other leadership positions at Exelon and BGE’s sister utility, ComEd (Chicago).
